- Woman Found Deceased in Stayton; Detectives Investigating (Photo)on January 12, 2021 at 12:02 am
At approximately 7:33 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2021, Stayton Police responded to the 300 block of W. Water St after receiving a suspicious circumstances call. When officers arrived, they discovered a deceased woman inside of the residence with an apparent gunshot wound. A man at the residence was detained by Stayton Police. The deceased woman has been identified as Karen Schaefer, 70, of Stayton. The cause and manner of her death will be determined at an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office. Brian Schaefer, 38, of Stayton is being charged with Murder 2 with a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has been asked to assist the Stayton Police Department by leading the investigation. We are working collaboratively with the Stayton Police Department, Marion County District Attorney’s Office, Keizer Police Department, Salem Police Department, and Woodburn Police Department on this investigation. Due to this being an active investigation, no additional information is available for release at this time. There is no indication there is any outstanding danger to the community. Any additional information related to this investigation will be released by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

Deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating an Adult in Custody, AIC, who walked away from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Work Crew. Blake Dale Johnson, 22, was working as part of a work crew project at Hillview Park, 502 Ewald Ave SE. in Salem. At around 10 a.m. on January 4th, 2021 he walked away from the work crew and his whereabouts are currently unknown. Mr. Johnson was in custody serving a sanction for a parole violation as well as a jail sentence for the crimes of Assault IV, Criminal Mischief II, and Contempt of Court. His scheduled release date was 03/23/21. Mr. Johnson is a white adult male with blue eyes and brown hair. He is 5’11” tall and weighs 190 lbs. The Marion County Transition Center prepares AIC’s for re-entry into the community prior to release from custody. Deputies are asking anyone with information about Mr. Johnson to call the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 503-588-5032
- Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on New Year's Eve; Deputies Investigating (Photo)on January 1, 2021 at 8:51 pm
On December 31st, 2020, at 6:34 p.m., deputies were called to the 4100 block of Brooklake Rd NE after a pedestrian was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. When emergency crews arrived in the area, they began assisting the 23-year-old female who had life-threatening injuries. Deputies interviewed witnesses at the scene and were assisted by crash investigators from the Oregon State Police. The involved driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Based upon initial information, deputies learned the female was crossing the road in front of May Trucking when she was struck by the vehicle. The pedestrian, Cassidy Kendall, 23, of Oak Harbor, Washington is currently in critical condition at OHSU. Due to this being an ongoing investigation, no additional information is available for release at this time.

Deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating an Adult in Custody, AIC, who walked away from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Transition Center. Jose Daniel Martinez, 26, walked away from the facility around 9:04 p.m., on Tuesday, December 29th, 2020. Martinez was in custody for a Parole Violation, his scheduled release date was March 9th, 2021. Martinez is a Hispanic adult male with brown eyes and black hair. He is 5’7” tall and weighs 220 lbs. The Marion County Transition Center prepares AIC’s for re-entry into the community prior to release from custody. AICs are allowed to leave the facility for pre-approved treatment or medical appointments. Deputies are asking anyone with information about Martinez to call the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 503-588-5032.
- Two Vehicle Crash Near Silverton Results in Fatality (Photo)on December 29, 2020 at 5:09 pm
On December 28th, 2020, at approximately 11:40 a.m. deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Silverton Road NE and Brush Creek Road NE. When first responders arrived at the scene they located two involved vehicles, a silver 2002 Lexus RX300 and a white 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche which had been in a t-bone type collision. The driver of the Lexus, Marcia Ushimaru, 66, of Mt. Angel was transported from the scene by ambulance to an area hospital where she later died from injuries sustained during the crash. There were no other passengers in the vehicle with her. The Avalanche was occupied by three people at the time of the crash. The driver, Regina Berntgen, 52, of Salem and two passengers were transported by ambulance, none of the occupants from the Avalanche sustained life-threatening injuries. Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office CRASH team responded to assist with investigating the crash. Deputies determined the driver of the Lexus had been going southbound on Brush Creek Road NE prior to the crash. The Avalanche was traveling westbound on Silverton Road NE when the driver of the Lexus pulled out in front of them for an unknown reason. At this time it does not appear as if alcohol or speed were contributing factors to the crash. Silverton Road was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Silverton Fire District, Woodburn Ambulance, and Marion County Public Works during this incident.
